Today, you’ll learn how to buy tickets for the Colosseum using the official website or at the last minute through trusted agencies. I’ll share my personal experience of reserving tickets and visiting this iconic Ancient Rome landmark.
The Colosseum in Rome is an undisputed symbol of Italy. However, upon arriving in the Eternal City to enjoy one of the world’s most popular attractions, you have several options to either get inside the amphitheater or miss out:
- Do not worry in advance, skip reading the advice in this article, and come at any convenient time only to NOT BUY tickets at the box office, as they are not available for the coming days. Tickets are only available online and must be booked in advance; each session has a visitor quota.
- Book tickets online for a specific time through the official website and enter the Colosseum “without a queue,” preferably in the afternoon or among the first in the early morning. See the instructions below on how to do this.
- Sign up for an individual tour with a good guide who will suggest the best time to enter and make you fall in love with the history of Ancient Rome. Without a guide, you risk not understanding the grandeur of this monumental attraction, and it will remain just a “pile of stones” for you.

Instructions for Booking Colosseum Tickets on the Official Website
Important! Scroll through these instructions to the end first. You have 15 minutes to complete the ticket booking. If you don’t make it in time, you will have to start over. Prepare your credit card, email, and the names and surnames of all adult companions.
Let’s begin!
Switch to English at ticketing.colosseo.it/en/ and select INDIVIDUALS – this option is suitable for groups of up to 8 people.
You will land on the page ticketing.colosseo.it/en/categorie/singoli-1-8-persone/ to select the type of ticket.
Choose the standard 24H – COLOSSEUM, ROMAN FORUM, PALATINE ticket for €18. Click Purchase.
In the Number of Participants field, select the number of tickets you need. In the box below, choose the desired date. Note that Roma Pass holders have a different reservation page: ticketing.colosseo.it/en/eventi/24h-colosseo-foro-romano-palatino-roma-pass/.
Scroll down a bit to select the visit time. Usually, the best times from 8:30 to 9:00 AM are sold out. You can catch these slots if you book exactly one month in advance, as they are released for sale monthly. You can also buy morning slots from trusted agencies; see the list below.
Visiting the Colosseum after 3:00 PM in the evening is also a good idea. I recommend going around 5:00 PM. If you are bringing a professional guide, find out first what time you should buy tickets for. Each tour has its own schedule and optimal entry time.
Scroll down again and select the number of tickets you need. Note that reservations are not required for children under 18.
If you are accompanied by a guide, click the Show button to the right of Group carrier.
In the Tourist guide field, add one slot reservation for your guide – this is free.
The cart is on the right side of the screen on a computer or at the bottom on a mobile device. Check the number of tickets, date, and time of visit.
Click CONTINUE.
Fill in the name and surname of each visitor – these will be checked at the entrance, likely more than once.
Next, enter the buyer’s information. Registration on the website is not mandatory, but it is essential to carefully enter your email address twice correctly. Check the boxes next to the first two mandatory items and click CONFIRM YOUR REGISTRATION.
Then proceed as with any online purchase – choose the payment method, usually USE PAYMENT CARD. Enter your card details, name, surname, and email address.
Congratulations, you have successfully purchased tickets to the Colosseum in Rome. Check your email, save the PDF ticket on your phone, or print it out.
What the Electronic Ticket Looks Like
Each ticket to the Colosseum will show the dates, times, and the name and surname of the visitor next to the QR code.
The ticket also includes a clear map of the area and all possible instructions.

On the Day of Your Visit
On the day of your visit, arrive 20-30 minutes before the time indicated on your ticket. You will need to go through several checks.
If you are lucky enough to have a slot at 8:30 AM, you will see two or three lines of people; join any of them. Prepare your ID and ticket QR code.
Once inside the first radius, you will face another document check. Yes, it is strange that documents are checked multiple times, but just accept it and relax. Then, proceed to the security checkpoint with metal detectors, similar to airport security.
Stay slightly to the right on the path for individual ticket holders.

Walk a bit further and turn right to reach the first observation deck inside the Colosseum. The photo below was taken in the first minutes after opening, showing the arena with fewer tourists. Friends of ours visited, and we booked tickets for them at 8:30 AM exactly 30 days in advance.

By 9 AM and throughout the day, the observation decks inside the Colosseum are always crowded.

Nevertheless, you can sometimes find a moment to take a photo that makes it look like the Colosseum is just for you.

I hope this guide was helpful and that your desire to connect with antiquity will soon be fulfilled.
