The operation principle of automatic gas stations is uniform throughout Italy. Let’s consider, using the example of a gas station on Sicily (Sicilia), how to properly pay for fuel.
As you approach the gas station, note that fuel prices vary. If a gas station employee is serving you, providing service (Servito), then the cost of gasoline or diesel will increase by about 40 cents per liter. By refueling, for example, 30 liters, you will overpay about 12 euros.
Naturally, it is much more economical to refuel yourself. Drive up to the pumps on the side that says SELF (self-service).
Look for a standalone cash acceptance machine; in our example in the photo, it is orange.
So, if the machine looks old, you’ve found a gas station on some godforsaken highway, or you’re refueling there for the first time, I strongly recommend starting with a small amount. First, refuel for ten euros. The machine works intuitively simple – insert the bill. It’s important to know that the machine usually does not give change!
Select the pump number you want to use to dispense fuel.
Immediately proceed to the pump; the fuel dispensing will start and stop automatically. If the refueling is successful, you can repeat the procedure for a more significant amount. I wish you successful journeys through Italy and recommend exploring my author’s 10-day itinerary in Western Sicily.
