What to Know Before Planning a Vacation in Umbria
When is the best time to visit Umbria?
How much does it cost to stay at a farmhouse?
Which towns do you recommend visiting first?
How many days do you need to see Umbria’s highlights?
Where and how should you eat?
Should you stay in one farmhouse or move to a new one each day?
I present to you a selection of the best farm stays in Umbria, carefully chosen based on our experience and tourist reviews. Some of these properties are former farms converted by their heirs into small hotels, while others continue to host genuine rural life.
All attractions and points of interest in Umbria are conveniently featured in our exclusive mobile travel guide app.
Agriturismo Casale Dei Frontini
Just a 2-hour drive from Rome or 30 minutes from Perugia, and you’ve arrived in paradise.
The Frontini family farmhouse is our favorite place to stay in Umbria. I even celebrated my birthday here once, and we’ll definitely return.
The farm features a small vineyard, grows various vegetables, and raises Chianina cattle—the same breed used for the famous steaks in the neighboring region—as well as rabbits, pigs, and horses.
Just a 10-minute drive away is the beautiful medieval town of Todi, perfect for an evening stroll—we’ve done so several times. For a fixed price of €30 per person (with unlimited water and house wine included), you can enjoy dinner on-site. Be prepared for a feast, though—Silvana prepares the dinners and decides what will be served, as there is no set menu. We’re not picky eaters, so this setup is perfect for us, especially since we love the local cuisine. We’ve often noticed that locals celebrating special occasions, as well as tourists from nearby towns, come to dine with Silvana.
A drawback—and a huge advantage—of this stay is that the farmhouse has only four rooms, which are often booked months in advance.
Agriturismi Farina
The Agriturismi Farina farmhouse is set on over 247 acres (100 hectares) of agricultural land, including fields planted with grains, olive groves, and woodlands where beautiful purebred horses are raised.
Guests can enjoy watching the horses graze freely on the land surrounding the farmhouses. The property also features a garden with a swimming pool and a barbecue area.
Five must-visit places nearby:
- Montepulciano – one of Italy’s most beautiful historic villages and a renowned Nobile di Montepulciano wine-producing area;
- Cortona – featured in Frances Mayes’ book *Under the Tuscan Sun*;
- Perugia – no introduction needed; plan a full day to explore it;
- Assisi – the city of Saint Francis, about an hour’s drive away. Consider visiting it in the morning and stopping by Perugia on the way back.
- Siena – dedicate a whole day to explore its attractions;
- Castiglione del Lago – a lakeside town just a 15-minute drive away. In summer, you can relax at one of its beaches.

Antica Residenza Montereano
The ancestors of Andrea and Giacomo, the current owners of the Antica Residenza Montereano farmhouse, built it in the 19th century.
The property is located just 3 miles (5 km) from the beautiful town of Gubbio, surrounded by greenery and tall trees, and features a swimming pool with panoramic views.
The location is strategically excellent, sitting near the border of Umbria and Tuscany—perfect if you plan to explore both regions.
The farm produces olive oil and grows grain crops. Accommodation includes rooms for 2–4 guests and apartments for up to 6–7 people. When booking, you can specify dietary preferences, such as gluten-free breakfasts, or hobbies, and Andrea and Giacomo will do their best to accommodate your requests.

Borgo Pulciano Agriturismo
Borgo Pulciano is a unique medieval village set on a 10-acre (4-hectare) estate comprising six farmhouses.
It’s the perfect place for a relaxing vacation in Umbria and for exploring the region.
The vast grounds are thoughtfully laid out and feature two swimming pools, so it’s easy to avoid noisy children if any are vacationing nearby. For children, there’s also a dedicated playground, and adjacent to the village is a 1.2-mile (2 km) wellness trail for walking.
In Umbertide, just 2.5 miles (4 km) from the farmhouse, you’ll find a beautiful medieval fortress.
Relais Parco Subasio
I wrote a detailed review of Relais Parco Subasio in this article. This former farmhouse has been converted into a charming small hotel by the current owner, Cristian.
A major highlight is its location—one of the highest in the region. In summer, there’s a pool, and nearby you’ll find Assisi and one of my favorite restaurants, Da Giovannino. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
Antica Fonte
The Antica Fonte farmhouse is located on a picturesque hill, just 1.9 miles (3 km) from Assisi. The owners are Paolo and Daniela.
Guests have access to a fully equipped kitchen, allowing you to prepare meals and enjoy dining on the terrace. The property is surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful silence, interrupted only by birdsong in the morning. If you’re looking for a quiet place with minimal neighbors, this is an ideal choice. Please note that there is no swimming pool here.
Relais Il Cantico della Natura
From the grounds of the stone farmhouse Relais Il Cantico della Natura, built in the 16th century, there are stunning views of Lake Trasimeno.
The rooms offer views of olive groves and forests. The property includes a restaurant, a small fitness center, a sauna, and a Turkish bath.
Cerqua Rosara Residence
The apartments at the Cerqua Rosara Residence farmhouse are perfect for an extended vacation—this enchanting place requires a minimum booking of two nights.
The property includes everything you might need, including a washing machine, dishwasher, charcoal grill, and swimming pool. Chickens, ducks, goats, and a donkey live on-site. If you’re traveling with children, they will be thrilled. The surrounding area is perfect for walks.
Agriturismo Casanova
Agriturismo Casanova is set on a picturesque hill near Gubbio.
Guests can enjoy an outdoor swimming pool, a garden, barbecue facilities, a hammock, and a rocking chair.
Agriturismo il Castello
The Il Castello complex is located at an altitude of 600 meters in a 13th-century farmhouse within the Monte Subasio Natural Park, just 3.7 miles (6 km) from Assisi.
Get ready to connect with nature and wake up to the crowing of roosters.
Guests can also dine at the on-site restaurant, which serves traditional Umbrian dishes prepared with organic vegetables grown on the property.
Eremito – Adults Only
The eco-friendly resort hotel Eremito is for adults only and is housed in a restored 14th-century building surrounded by a 7,400-acre (3,000-hectare) nature reserve.
The hotel accepts guests aged 18 and older; children are not permitted. A rare option in Italy, it offers all-inclusive stays starting at approximately €330 per night for two people. It’s ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle, enjoy peace and quiet, and reconnect with nature. There is also a space for yoga practice.
My Ideal Daily Itinerary for a Vacation in Umbria
We typically follow this daily schedule while staying in Umbria:
- At sunrise, we go for a run and do some light exercise while enjoying the dawn and listening to birdsong—though this step can easily be skipped.
- Breakfast around 8:00 AM.
- We head out to explore a town, walking for several hours and staying for lunch, which across Italy usually starts around 12:30 PM. After lunch, we might stroll a bit more or head to another town. We generally return to the farmhouse in the afternoon to relax by the pool, read, or take a nap.
- Around 6:00 PM, we enjoy a walk nearby to work up an appetite, as the farmhouses are almost always located in stunning settings. When we’re in the mood for more adventures, we drive to a nearby town to combine dinner with an evening stroll. Another excellent option is to open a bottle of wine at sunset and enjoy it on the apartment terrace as an aperitif.
