Panoramic View Restaurant Near Spoleto

On our way from Rome to Umbria, we stopped for lunch at a fairytale spot just 14 minutes from Spoleto.

The place is called the “Medieval Restaurant Golden Rooster” (Gallo d’Oro Ristoro Medievale), perched atop a hill near the town of Pissignano. Even the drive to the restaurant is enchanting — this is the Italy I dream of.

Exact address: Via del Castello, 45-48, 06042 Campello Sul Clitunno PG

We booked a table through The Fork app with a 20% discount. Here are my impressions.

From the restaurant’s parking lot, there’s a breathtaking panorama of Umbria’s hills and plains.

The house wine is served in a ceramic jug. Sipping wine from medieval goblets while taking in the beauty of the surrounding landscape is an unforgettable experience!

The menu is small and features traditional dishes. Considering the location and the view, the prices are quite reasonable.

As a starter, we were served bruschetta with olive oil and rosemary. Knowing the portion sizes and the richness of the dishes, we each ordered just one main course.

A regional specialty of Umbria is grilled lamb (Agnello scottadito alla griglia) — a dish we make a point to try at every restaurant.

We ordered three types of pasta:

  1. Spaghetti with tomatoes and Pecorino cheese (spaghetti al rancetto con pecorino romano) for €8
  2. Gnocchetti with artichokes, Chianina beef ragù, and black truffle (Gnocchetti di Colfiorito con carciofi, ragù espresso di Chianina e tartufo nero) for €15
  3. Strangozzi with summer truffle (Strangozzi con tartufo estivo) for €10

For dessert, we decided to share one Tiramisu. The total bill for lunch came to €70, but with the discount, it was only €55. We also left a €5 tip.

Even without discounts, Gallo d’Oro is one of the best restaurants we’ve visited in Italy. Great views, excellent service, delicious food, and reasonable prices.

Next to the restaurant is the medieval Castello di Pissignano, but we decided to save that visit for another time. It was a hot day, and we were eager to reach our villa with a pool.

In Umbria, we stayed near Assisi at the villa Il Casale di Monica. Here’s our video review. Tips for choosing accommodations in Umbria can be found in this section.
