Corniglia is the smallest town in the Cinque Terre National Park. Unlike the other villages of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not situated directly on the Ligurian Sea but perched about 330 feet (100 meters) above it. That means it’s not accessible by sea—only land transportation will get you there.
While the other Cinque Terre towns—Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Manarola, and Monterosso—are deeply tied to the sea, life in Corniglia is rooted in the land and agriculture. Surrounded on three sides by terraced vineyards, the town is known for producing excellent local wine.

How to Get There
The most convenient way to reach Cinque Terre—and Corniglia in particular—from other Italian cities is by train. Trains to La Spezia run from Genoa, Turin, Milan, and Pisa. From La Spezia, transfer to a regional train bound for Corniglia.
From the train station, visitors can walk to the town center—though it’s a steep uphill climb, which can be challenging on a hot summer day. Fortunately, a shuttle bus runs directly from the station to the center. You can check the schedule at the station, but in practice, the bus usually departs once enough passengers disembark the train.
Attractions
Lardarina Staircase
The Lardarina is a long brick staircase that leads from the Corniglia train station up to the town center. It consists of 377 steps—climbing it is no small feat, but those who reach the top are greeted with a congratulatory sign. Many visitors opt to take the bus up and then descend the staircase on foot, enjoying the stunning panoramic views of the Ligurian coast along the way.
Church of Saint Peter
The Church of Saint Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro) was built in 1334 in the Gothic style by order of the ruling Fieschi family. Its gray stone façade features an elegant rose window carved from gleaming white Carrara marble, along with a statue of Saint Peter.
The church’s interior is decorated in soft, muted yellow-green hues. Every summer, the Church of Saint Peter hosts an organ music festival.
Terrace of Santa Maria
The Terrace of Santa Maria (Terrazza di Santa Maria) is a scenic natural highlight in Corniglia. Situated about 295 feet (90 meters) above sea level, it stretches from the town’s main street, Via Fieschi, past the Church of Saint Peter. From this terrace, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over the Marina di Corniglia bay.
