Naples is one of the resort cities in western Italy, located on the northern shore of the Bay of Naples. Even in ancient times, the bay’s coast was densely populated. The Tyrrhenian Sea forms the Bay of Naples, which cuts into the coast with a width of 22 km (14 miles) at the entrance and a length of 30 km (19 miles). The bay’s maximum depth is 451 m (1,480 ft).
Thanks to its mild climate and rich natural surroundings, this is one of the best places to vacation in Italy. On the eastern shore lies the active Mount Vesuvius, which is the symbol of the bay. At the entrance of the bay is the famous resort islands of Ischia and Capri.
Each year, more and more vacationers are drawn to the southern coast of the bay, known as the Neapolitan Riviera.
The jewel of the Riviera is rightfully considered the city of Sorrento, which in the past century was a popular resort among Russian nobility. Here, members of the Romanov dynasty and famous Russian writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and Maxim Gorky vacationed. The hotels in Sorrento offer breathtaking views of Vesuvius.

South of Naples, in the Gulf of Salerno, is the city of Salerno – a town of the Normans and Lombards. This area contains a large archaeological zone, as Greek colonists founded settlements here as early as the 6th century BC.
