Pinzolo Ski Resort in Italy – Ultimate Guide to the 2024-2025 Season

Pinzolo ski resort in Italy

Pinzolo is renowned for skiing, paragliding flights, mountain hikes, dog sledding, and horseback rides through the Dolomites. Moreover, it involves conquering high peaks, challenging routes, and icy waterfalls. This isn’t the complete list of activities available in this cozy settlement nestled high in the mountains.

Sights in Pinzolo

Location of Pinzolo

Pinzolo is a municipality situated in northeastern Italy, falling within the administrative center of Trento. It is located 387 miles (624 km) from Rome, the capital of Italy. The closest major city, Verona, is 93 miles (150 km) away from the village. On the geographical map, the community can be found at the coordinates 46°10′ north latitude and 10°46′ east longitude.

Pinzolo

The village is nestled in the Dolomites, within the heart of the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park, at an elevation of 2,575 feet (785 m) above sea level. It’s the largest town in the Val Rendena valley, which separates the Adamello and Brenta mountain ranges. Just one mountain lies directly near it – Doss de Sabion, standing at 6,890 feet (2,100 m). From its summit, breathtaking views of the surroundings and the adjacent Madonna di Campiglio resort can be enjoyed.

The population of the municipality is 3,054 people, and it’s worth mentioning that the number of residents is increasing. Nearly a century ago, in 1921, the population was 1,777. The village covers an area of 26.6 square miles (69 km2). While it’s smaller than the Madonna di Campiglio ski resort located just a 15-minute drive away, the skiing area here is more spacious. Additionally, prices are lower, and the town exudes a quieter, more tranquil atmosphere.

Adjacent to the community is another resort, Carisolo. They are separated by the Fiume Sarca di Campiglio river and connected by a bridge. This proximity means that while strolling through one village, you might suddenly find yourself in the other.

Description of Pinzolo

Piazza San Giacomo serves as the main street of the municipality. Here, you’ll find the tourist information office Ufficio Informazione Turistica Pinzolo Val Rendena. You can obtain maps and other useful information about the area and various tourist services. Detailed information about their services can be found at www.campigliodolomiti.it.

Adjacent to the tourist office, in the same building, is the Cinema Paladolomiti movie theater. Nearby is another organization called Pro Loco Pinzolo, which promotes the resort and organizes interesting events. On the corner of the square is the municipal school.
Across from Pro Loco Pinzolo stands the town hall, Comune di Pinzolo. Its back faces the square, while the main entrance is on Viale della Pace.

Pinzolo

The town boasts a library located at Via al Sole, 30. Not far from it, on Strada Statale 239, stands a small monument to a knife sharpener, Monumento all’Arrotino. Erected in 1969, it commemorates times when locals left the community in search of a better life due to the region’s dire circumstances before the resort’s establishment.

The village hosts numerous shops, but keep in mind that locals cherish their Siesta. Thus, the lunch break here extends from 12:30 to 3:30 PM.

Sights of Interest in Pinzolo

Architectural attractions in Pinzolo are few due to the devastating fire of 1913 that nearly wiped out the settlement. This is why its antiquity can be discerned from only a few surviving temples. For instance, the Church of San Vigilio (Chiesa di San Vigilio) emerged in the 14th century. It’s renowned for the exterior fresco “Dance of Death” by Simone Baschenis. Initial mentions of the Chapel of San Gerolamo (Chiesetta di San Gerolamo) date back to the 16th century, while the central San Lorenzo Church (Parrocchia San Lorenzo) appeared two centuries later.

San Lorenzo Church

The parish church of San Lorenzo (Parrocchia San Lorenzo) is situated at Piazza Libertà, 13, with its rear side facing Piazza S. Giacomo. Construction of the church began in 1765 on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Lawrence.

The bell tower of the church is visible from all over the commune

The project was conceived by architect Pietro Bianchi, who a decade earlier had built a church in neighboring Carisolo. Primary construction was completed within two years, and by 1778, the facade was fully finished. The church was consecrated in 1837.

Built in the Baroque style, the church faces east. Its side and rear walls bear an ascetic appearance, while the facade is adorned. The facade is brightly painted with a portal at its center and a large window above it. Flanking the entrance and window are substantial images of saints. Above the entrance is an inscription. Adjacent to the church is a bell tower constructed in 1867, visible from all corners of the community. It’s crowned by a pyramid-shaped dome and features clocks beneath the belfry.

In 1913, the church suffered greatly from a fire, including the bell tower’s spire. It wasn’t until 1947 that a new spire, this time made of copper, crowned the building. In the 1970s, a chapel and baptistery were added to the church.

San Lorenzo Church has a single nave. The main altar is made of multi-colored marble, intriguingly originally intended for a church in Verona. Above the central niche, an oil painting on black stone depicts the risen Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene.

Church of San Vigilio

Church of Saint Vigilio

The Church of San Vigilio (Chiesa di San Vigilio) is located on Via San Vigilio, in a very tranquil area of the town. Adjacent to it is an ancient cemetery. It’s the oldest church in the commune, founded in 1362. Builders used granite as the primary construction material. In the 16th century, the building was expanded. Today, the church has a rectangular shape, a bell tower, three naves, arches, and pointed vaults supported by granite columns. The southern facade of the Church of San Vigilio features frescoes from different epochs.

Fresco "Dance of Death" by Simone Baschenis

The most famous fresco is the Dance of Death (La Danza Macabra), painted by Simone Baschenis in 1539. It depicts images of sinners, regardless of their social status: here you’ll find the Pope, the king, the wealthy, the poor, the young, and the old. The painting signifies the equality of people in the face of death, while the dancing skeletons among them speak of the inevitability of fate.

Inside the church is adorned lavishly: there are many frescoes (unfortunately, many of them are damaged by time), images of saints on the dome, and altars with gilding. There’s also a series of paintings narrating the life of the young bishop Vigilio, who met a martyr’s death while preaching in the valley.

The church is open for tours during the summer, from June 1st to September 30th, except Sundays and Monday mornings. Operating hours: 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. If you wish to visit it at a different time of the year or day, you’ll need to arrange it separately, and it’s not guaranteed.

Chapel of Saint Jerome

The Chapel of Saint Jerome (Chiesetta di San Gerolamo) is located at Piazza S. Gerolamo, 1. It’s very small and doesn’t immediately catch the eye. The exact date of its establishment is unknown, but there’s information that in the Middle Ages, monks used it as a branch chapel. The first records of the chapel date back to the late 16th century.

Recently, the chapel was restored, and inside, fascinating frescoes were discovered. One of them portrays Saint Jerome and was painted in the 16th century. There’s also a gilded wooden altar here, believed to date back to the 17th century. Nearby, there’s a wooden sculpture of the Madonna.

Once a year, on September 30th, on the feast day of Saint Jerome, the local residents gather here for a service. After the ceremony, they set up a buffet and organize a festive program.

What to Do in Winter in Pinzolo

Pinzolo is primarily known as a ski resort. The winter season here starts in November and lasts until the end of March. If there’s no snow, artificial snow is brought in to ensure even coverage on the slopes.

For tourists, there are not only downhill skiing options but also cross-country skiing on flat terrain, as well as ski walks. Additionally, during winter, you can find the following activities:

  • Paragliding;
  • Snowshoeing hikes;
  • Dog sledding;
  • Ice climbing (ascents on frozen waterfalls);
  • Ice skating;
  • Swimming;
  • Snowboarding;
  • Sledding.

Active recreation is tailored not only for skilled users of skis, skates, snowboards, etc., but also for beginners. There are 500 experienced instructors here who will teach the basics and provide an engaging pastime. However, it’s worth noting that finding an English-speaking instructor might not be easy.

  • Tip: You can check the presence of snow on the slopes using online webcams on the official website www.pinzolo.it/webcam/

Pinzolo

At the end of each January, the Vertical Up competitions take place on Mount Doss dei Sabion. It’s one of the stages of the cup races for high-speed descent. Athletes run on one of the most technical tracks in the region – the Tulot Audi Quattro.

vertical-up-pinzolo

Moreover, they can choose any equipment: running in spiked shoes, on uphill skiing gear, and even snowshoes with crampons. They have to overcome 800 meters in vertical ascent, starting from an altitude of 2625 feet (800 meters) above sea level and finishing at a height of 5577 feet (1700 meters). The route length is 1.68 miles (2700 meters). The prize for the winner is 8000 euros.

Skiing

Those who wish to go skiing can choose from two types of trails. The first type consists of tracks laid out near the village. Their total length is 16.2 miles (26 kilometers). You can also ski on a more extensive area: the Pinzolo-Campiglio Express lift has connected several ski resorts, increasing the skiing area to 93.2 miles (150 kilometers).

Trails Near the Resort

Pinzolo ski map

For the ski trails located on the mountain near the village, the following indicators are characteristic:

  • Total length: 16 miles;
  • Total number: 16;
  • Length of easy trails (blue): 1.9 miles;
  • Number of easy trails (blue): 5 runs;
  • Length of intermediate trails (red): 12.4 miles;
  • Number of intermediate trails (red): 8 runs;
  • Length of advanced (black) trails: 1.9 miles;
  • Number of advanced (black) trails: 3 runs;
  • Total number of lifts: 10;
  • Number of chairlifts: 7;
  • Starting station elevation: 2625 ft above sea level;
  • Ending station elevation: 6890 ft above sea level.

The ski trails are located on the slope of Mount Doss de Sabion. To get to the top, you can contact the operator of the Funivie Pinzolo S. Spa cable cars, located at Via Bolognini, 84. It’s not far from the Church of Saint Vigilio, but closer to the center.

For the easy trails, you can take two lifts. The trails are located in the upper skiing area, at elevations between 6890 and 4920 ft. However, they are short, so if the intermediate level is not suitable, it might be uncomfortable. In that case, it’s better to go skiing in Madonna di Campiglio.

The majority of ski trails are easy red ones, suitable for those who are skilled at skiing. Trees are very rare here, so skiing downhill is very convenient. The longest trail is DoloMitica: its length from the mountain peak to the lower station in the village is 3.6 miles, with an elevation difference of 4100 ft.

Black trails are meant for professionals only. They are not long, but the slopes are very steep. The most challenging trail is Competition. The elevation difference on it is 984 ft. It meets all the necessary standards and is where the “Mickey Mouse Trophy” (Trofeo Topolino) youth international tournament takes place.

Skiarea Campiglio Dolomiti

In 2011, the Pinzolo-Campiglio Express cable car was introduced, which connected the ski routes of Pinzolo, Madonna di Campiglio, Folgarida, and Marilleva. This skiing area is known as Skiarea Campiglio Dolomiti.

The length of the trails is 93 miles. The elevation of the skiing area has also increased, as now you can descend from an elevation of 8200 ft above sea level. The trails vary in difficulty:

  • 42 blue;
  • 37 red;
  • 21 black;
  • 4 snow parks;
  • The rest are cross-country trails.

The lift is equipped with eight-seat cabins and can accommodate 1800 tourists per hour. The ride takes 20 minutes. You can check the current ticket prices from the provided link.

Cross-Country Skiing

Holidays in Pinzolo

Cross-country skiing is well-suited for those looking to combine intense athletic exercises with moderate speeds and safe descents. While there are no such tracks near the village itself, there are some nearby options. These include 5 km of cross-country tracks near Carisolo and 22 km of trails at the Campo Carlo Magno Pass, just beyond Madonna di Campiglio.

At the pass, there are tracks for children, and it often hosts world championships. The entrance fee is 7 euros, and equipment rental is 15 euros. Carisolo’s entrance is free, but equipment rental costs 11 euros for a full day. It’s advisable to check for snow availability beforehand.
More details about the service can be found here.

Sledding

Those who are hesitant on skis choose sleds

For those who are not confident on skis or enjoy sledding, a sledding track was opened in Madonna di Campiglio in winter 2016. Its specifications are as follows:

  • Mountain height: 2070 meters above sea level;
  • Track length: 2743 meters;
  • Elevation difference: 340 meters;
  • Maximum slope: 18.00%;
  • Average width: 2.8 meters;
  • Track surface area: 8,229 square meters.

A chairlift takes you up the mountain.

Snowboarding

Brentapark is located at the base of the black Grual trail on Mount Dos del Sabion. The park is serviced by a “four-seat” chairlift (quattro posti). The features cater to both professionals and beginners. Competitions and festivals are frequently held here. Brentapark is open from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. You can find the latest information here.

Winter Hiking

Ski touring offers a great alternative to downhill skiing. However, venturing out on your own is not recommended. An instructor who is well acquainted with the roads and knows where it’s safe or hazardous is essential. Additionally, both skiing and hiking options are available for enthusiasts.

Several routes are available. You can start directly from the commune with the Plazza gondola’s middle station, located at 1148 meters above sea level. The route is Plaza-La Val d’Agola-Lago Asciutto. The journey takes 6.5 hours and involves skiing to the north, west, and south. While not difficult, it is a lengthy red route. Exercise caution near the lake, as avalanches are possible.

ski tourism

A shorter route takes 4.5 hours and begins near Pinzolo in the village of l’abitato di S. Antonio di Mavignola. The path passes through the Nambrón valley and the Segantini shelter. The journey involves uphill sections, so you’ll need ropes, crampons, and an ice axe.

From the same village, you can embark on a ten-hour journey through the Cornisello lakes. This requires ascending to an altitude exceeding 2 km. The ascent takes eight hours, while the descent takes 2.5 hours. Crampons and shoe spikes are necessary.

Apart from these routes, hiking organizers offer other options, often from neighboring towns like Madonna di Campiglio and Campo Carlo Magno. More details are available here.

Dog Sledding

Another fascinating activity is dog sledding. Various tours are organized to farms where llamas, alpacas, and Scottish cows reside. Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes pull the sleds.

Sled dog riding

Nighttime excursions can also be arranged. However, this service isn’t available directly in Pinzolo, so you need to head to Madonna di Campiglio. Keep in mind that if you want to enjoy a late evening dog sledding experience, you’ll need to use a car to reach the village at night.

Summer doesn’t leave the dogs bored either. Organizers like Dogsledding Athabaska arrange hikes where huskies and Alaskan Malamutes assist tourists in climbing various heights.

Ice Climbing

Scaling a frozen waterfall that’s 130 meters high? Why not? This activity is definitely tailored for avid climbers. Ice climbing is a unique discipline, and not every ski resort offers it. Especially for mountaineers, special routes have been developed here that will stay in athletes’ memories for a lifetime.

At the Winter Sports Palace, there are a restaurant and guesthouse. If interested, you can take skating lessons. The official rink website is www.pinzoloice.it.

For those who want to skate outdoors, Madonna di Campiglio is the destination. There’s Lake Conca Verde (laghetto della Conca Verde), which turns into a splendid ice rink during winter.

Antica Vetreria, and the Geopark (Casa del Parco “Geopark”) is situated on Piazza II Maggio.

Restaurants in Pinzolo

Pinzolo is a quiet town, so discos are rare here. For that, you’d need to head to Madonna di Campiglio. As for Pinzolo, in the evening, you can take a leisurely walk along the quiet streets, visit friends, or dine at a restaurant. And there are plenty of them here. In fact, many tourists suggest having breakfast at the hotel restaurant and opting for more interesting establishments for lunch and dinner.

Al Cardo Pizzeria

Delicious pizza is cooked in Al Cardo pizzeria

Delicious pizza is served at Al Cardo Pizzeria. It’s located at Via Manci, 20, not far from the Saint Jerome Chapel. Even Italians recommend this restaurant. As it’s a family-run establishment, the service is top-notch, and the ambiance is cozy and serene.

The staff speaks English. Apart from pizza, they also prepare tasty dishes like spaghetti carbonara, Tyrolean dumplings (gnocchetti tirolesi), and Strangolapreti (sausage-shaped pasta made from chard leaves soaked in milk and white bread, sprinkled with cheese and drizzled with butter).

La Briciola (!Permanently closed!)

pear risotto

The La Briciola restaurant is situated near the lift at Via Nepomuceno Bolognini, 27. The prices are reasonable, and discounts are available for frequent visitors. The staff is attentive, and the food is delicious. Visitors recommend trying the pear risotto, gnocchi, a traditional dish with beans and thinly sliced meat. However, the dish with venison and corn porridge isn’t highly regarded, as it resembles canned meat with poorly cooked corn.

Ristorante Pizzeria La Roda

The Ristorante Pizzeria La Roda pizzeria is located near the Church of St. Lawrence at Viale Guglielmo Marconi 15. It’s considered one of the more budget-friendly restaurants. The portions here are generous, so you can easily share a dish. Pizzas are prepared right in front of customers, and tortellini has received great reviews. Vegetarian options are available. The wine is affordable but only sold by the bottle. Therefore, it’s more economical to buy it for a group; for one or two people, the price could be higher compared to other restaurants.
