The American news agency CNN has published a rating of the most beautiful metro stations in Europe.
According to the authoritative publication, the most impressive and original platform in the metro is located in the Italian city of Naples (Napoli) and is called “Toledo.”
Another internationally recognized newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, endorsed the choice of its American counterparts.
“Toledo” metro station was opened in September 2012. Its depth is 50 meters, making Toledo the deepest metro station in Naples.
The project of the most beautiful metro station in Europe belongs to the Spanish architect Óscar Tusquets and two artists: William Kentridge and Robert Wilson. The design is done in white and blue colors. The unique and unusual design of the metro station gives the impression that you are inside a snow cave.
Eleven more platforms are included in the list of the most beautiful metro stations in Europe.
For example, Naples’ Toledo managed to bypass its rival Westfriedhof in Munich, which is given a unique look by huge orange lamps hanging from the ceiling.
The Munich metro station was opened in 1998, and then it was absolutely inconspicuous. However, everything changed in 2001, when 11 lamps with a diameter of 4 meters were installed and changed the look of Westfriedhof.
The third place in the list went to the “Komsomolskaya” metro station in Moscow.
CNN editors noted that the station’s design is too luxurious and pompous.
Initially, the authors of the Komsomolskaya project were assigned the following task. Since the metro station is located in a busy part of the metropolis, it should impress the residents and guests of the capital of Russia, not only the city but the whole country. That is why the deco of “Komsomolskaya” amazes even the most sophisticated critics: the station is dressed in marble, and the precious stones are so dazzling.
Other metro stations admitted by CNN are Olaias (Lisbon), T-Centralen (Stockholm), and others.
It is worth noting that such ratings and lists are created by different news agencies yearly.
However, over the past two years, Naples’ “Toledo” has invariably taken the first place.
However, the “Università” station was previously included in the list as the most striking one.
Colorful and bright, Universita station surprises with its modern design and unusual play of pink and blue colors. The idea of the project belongs to an architect of Anglo-Egyptian origin, Karim Rashid, who came up with another strange but interesting idea to depict the legendary Dante Alighieri and his beloved ones on the steps of the stairs.
